Directive 2006/24/EC amends Directive 2002/58/EC to oblige operators of public telephone services and internet service providers to retain personal data such as the calling number, the user ID, the identity of a user of an IP address for a period of between six months and two years. The aim is to ensure that the data retained is available for the purpose of the investigation, detection and prosecution of serious crime, as defined by each member State in its domestic law.
Member States must bring Directive into force by September 15th 2007.
Regular readers may recall a very negative opinion on this piece of legislation given by the European Data Protection Supervisor.
Do you know a web site or do you have any infotmation that shows how this directive is being transposed into the different EU countries?
